About Detectify

How the detector is maintained, what its results mean and how Detectify publishes Shopify app research.

Detectify is an independent Shopify storefront research tool maintained by Ivan Lopez Montero. It identifies publicly visible app, analytics and payment signatures. It never accesses a merchant's Shopify admin, private app list or backend data.

Who maintains Detectify?

Detectify is maintained by Ivan Lopez Montero. The project combines a browser-based detector, a curated signature dataset and editorial guides for merchants, developers and agencies researching public Shopify storefronts.

How detector results are produced

  1. The server requests the public storefront URL supplied by the user.
  2. The detector verifies that the returned storefront contains Shopify signals.
  3. Visible scripts, asset paths and markup are compared with the public signature dataset.
  4. Matches are grouped into apps, analytics tools and payment methods with a heuristic confidence label.

A match means that a known public signal was present. A missing match does not prove an app is absent: backend-only apps, private apps and customized implementations may leave no stable frontend trace. The complete limitations are documented in Why Shopify App Detectors Miss Apps.

Dataset maintenance

Signatures are reviewed against public storefront implementations and app documentation. Generic strings are avoided when they would create obvious false positives, while domain or asset-level patterns are preferred when available. Duplicate detections are collapsed in the interface so one app is not counted twice simply because it exposes more than one known pattern.

The current coverage totals and downloadable JSON are published on the Shopify App Detection Dataset page.

Editorial ranking policy

App rankings are editorial shortlists, not universal scores. Selection considers the use case, feature fit described in the official Shopify App Store listing, storefront visibility, implementation breadth and practical fit for the stated audience. Detectify does not invent trend arrows, ratings or prices when it does not have a reliable longitudinal source.

Listings are checked against official app pages where possible. Pricing, ratings and features can change after publication, so readers should verify the latest information in the Shopify App Store before installing an app.

Affiliate disclosure

Some outbound app links may be referral or affiliate links. They can generate a commission without changing the price paid by the visitor. Referral arrangements do not change whether an app is detected, the confidence label shown for a match or the stated technical limitations. Editorial ranking pages identify their selection method independently of detector output.

Corrections and updates

If an app has changed its public signature, a listing is outdated or a result appears incorrect, contact the maintainer through LinkedIn. Reproducible examples are reviewed against the current public storefront before the dataset or article is changed.
